Oliver M (Form VI) and Thomas (Form V) both play in the Hampshire County Youth String Orchestra; Oliver viola and Thomas violin. Membership of this is by annual audition only with a minimum standard of Grade 5 and is open to anyone in full time education in Hampshire.
This year Thomas is the only child in Year 5 to have passed the audition, and Oliver – who also successfully joined in Year 5 – is one of only 7 children in Year 6 with the other 48 coming from secondary schools right up to Year 12.
The orchestra rehearses every other Saturday during term time from 10:30 to 3:30, not to mention the many hours of individual practice needed throughout the year.
Saturday, 25th November saw the end of term concert, which was the first time this year's orchestra has played for an audience. They played Solfeggio by Arvo Part and Fiddlers Hill by Jeff Moore and it was by all accounts, truly amazing to see the standard of performance that can be achieved by these young players.
Future performances this year will be at Winchester Cathedral, The Anvil Theatre and the Royal Albert Hall.
In addition to this, Hugo (Form VI) also plays in the Hampshire Youth Training Wind Ensemble and is a member of the North East Hants Schools' Wind Ensemble
We are lucky to have such talented musicians in our midst!
